Arkansas adopts ASME A17.1-2007 for elevator and escalator safety. The state also adopts ASME A18.1-2005 for lifts, inclined wheelchair lifts, inclined stairway chairlifts, and residential elevators. These standards are incorporated by reference in Arkansas Administrative Rules of the Elevator Safety Board.

Testing & Inspection Schedule

Routine Inspection
Annual (12 months)

Comprehensive inspection per ASME A17.1-2007 covering hoistway, pit, car-top, machine room, door equipment, and safety devices.

Category 1 Test
Annual (12 months)

Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2007 covering no-load safety-device tests and routine maintenance verification.

Category 5 Test
Every 5 years

Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2007 covering full-load/full-speed comprehensive safety test.

Fire service functional test
Per ASME A17.1-2007 — Firefighter emergency operation verification per ASME A17.1-2007.
Applies to: Elevators with fire service capability
Accessibility equipment testing
