Code Adoption

Current Code
ASME A17.1-2004 and ASME A17.1-1996 (dual adoption)
Prior Code
Multiple ASME editions including A17.1-1996 and earlier
Effective Date
ASME A17.1-1996 for installations pre-05/01/2008; ASME A17.1-2004 for contracts signed on or after 05/01/2008
State Amendments
Yes

California has a unique dual-adoption approach: ASME A17.1-1996 applies to installations pre-May 1, 2008; ASME A17.1-2004 applies to contracts signed on or after May 1, 2008. The Elevator Safety Orders (Title 8, California Code of Regulations, Chapter 4, Subchapter 6) incorporate these standards by reference and supersede either code if differences exist. California also references ASME A17.2-2004 (Inspection guidelines).

Key Notes for California

California's Elevator Safety Orders incorporate two different ASME A17.1 editions depending on installation date: ASME A17.1-1996 (pre-05/01/2008) and ASME A17.1-2004 (contracts signed on or after 05/01/2008). The state Elevator Safety Orders supersede either code if differences exist. Periodic testing (CAT1: 12 months, CAT3: 36 months, CAT5: 60 months) must be witnessed by CCCI.
