Hawaii adopts ASME A17.1-2016 with state amendments through Title 12, Subtitle 8, Part 11 of the Administrative Rules of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health. The state enforces the Boiler and Elevator Safety Law to provide for safe operation and use of elevators.

Testing & Inspection Schedule
All elevators must be inspected annually per Hawaii requirements. Comprehensive inspection per ASME A17.1-2016 covering hoistway, pit, car-top, machine room, door equipment, and safety devices.
Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2016 covering no-load safety-device tests and routine maintenance verification.
Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2016 covering full-load/full-speed comprehensive safety test.
Additional Required Tests
Inspection certificate posted in car or on platform per state regulations.
