Idaho is transitioning to ASME A17.1-2022, effective July 1, 2025. The state also adopts ASME A17.3-2015 (existing elevators), A17.4-2015 (emergency personnel), A17.5-2019 (electrical equipment), and A17.6-2010 (suspension and governor systems). Idaho sets specific inspection requirements with state-certified elevator technicians and fire alarm technicians required on-site.

02 TESTING

Testing & Inspection Schedule

Routine Inspection
Annual (12 months)

All elevators must be inspected annually. Comprehensive inspection per ASME A17.1-2022 requirements. An elevator technician and fire alarm technician must be present on-site during inspection. Machine rooms and spaces must be free of dirt and debris with obstacles removed.

Category 1 Test
Annual (12 months)

Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2022 covering no-load safety-device tests and routine maintenance verification.

Category 5 Test
Every 5 years

Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2022 covering full-load/full-speed comprehensive safety test.

Additional Required Tests

Fire service functional test
Per ASME A17.1-2022 — Firefighter emergency operation verification per ASME A17.1-2022.
Applies to: Elevators with fire service capability
Fire alarm technician presence
During all inspections — Fire alarm technician must be present on-site during elevator inspection per Idaho requirements.
Applies to: All elevators
Certificate validity: 12 months
Inspection certificate posted in car or on platform per state regulations.

Acceptance Inspection: Required — New installations, alterations, and modernizations require acceptance inspection and required tests per ASME A17.1-2022 before placement in service. Equipment must be complete and safe for inspection.
05 ENFORCEMENT

Violations & Penalties

Deficiency notices, correction orders, stop-use/out-of-service orders, civil fines, and potential license suspension or revocation.

Operating Without Permit:

Unit ordered out of service; enforcement action and civil penalties.

Failed Inspection:

Deficiency notice with correction timeline. Failure to correct results in out-of-service order.
