Illinois adopts ASME A17.1-2019 with state amendments. Key amendment: Illinois requires Fire Alarm Initiating Device (FAID) testing once every 5 years with at least one additional hour per unit added to annual testing appointments after initial FAID test. State permits municipal/county authority for inspections. Note: Chicago has its own separate elevator code and is not subject to state requirements.

Testing & Inspection Schedule
All elevators must be inspected annually. Comprehensive inspection per ASME A17.1-2019 requirements. Certificate of operation renewable annually (every 3 years for religious buildings if sole conveyance).
Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2019 covering no-load safety-device tests and routine maintenance verification.
Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2019 covering full-load/full-speed comprehensive safety test.
Additional Required Tests
Certificate of operation posted in car or on platform per state regulations.
