Maryland adopted ASME A17.1-2019 effective October 22, 2022. The state operates an active Third-Party Qualified Elevator Inspector (TPQEI) program allowing private QEI inspectors to conduct annual periodic inspections, while the state retains final acceptance inspections for new installations and alterations. Maryland Division of Labor and Industry oversees licensing and safety inspections with two separate divisions managing different aspects.

Testing & Inspection Schedule
Semi-annual periodic inspections required per Maryland regulations. Third-party QEI inspectors or state inspectors may conduct annual periodic inspections. Final acceptance inspection within 3 years of contract date for new installations and alterations.
Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2019 covering no-load safety-device tests and routine maintenance verification. Testing schedule: January 1 - December 31 annually.
Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2019 covering full-load/full-speed comprehensive safety test.
Additional Required Tests
Inspection certificate posted in car or on platform per state regulations.
