02 TESTING

Testing & Inspection Schedule

Routine Inspection
Annual (12 months)

All elevators must be inspected annually. Comprehensive inspection per ASME A17.1-2016 requirements. Certificate of Operation required for operation.

Category 1 Test
Annual (12 months)

Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2016 covering basic examination of essential components.

Category 5 Test
Every 5 years

Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2016 covering comprehensive evaluation of all safety systems.

Additional Required Tests

Fire service functional test
Per ASME A17.1-2016 — Firefighter emergency operation verification per ASME A17.1-2016.
Applies to: Elevators with fire service capability
Certificate validity: 12 months
Certificate of Operation posted in car or on platform per state regulations.
03 LICENSING

Licensing Requirements

Elevator Inspector

Conduct inspections per ASME A17.1-2016

Requirements: 3+ years experience in designing, installing, maintaining or inspecting elevators; pass written examination (100 questions, 2-hour limit, 70% passing score)
Expires: Per renewal schedule
Elevator Mechanic (Journeyperson)

Maintenance, repair, and testing of elevators

Requirements: 3+ years continuous apprenticeship/experience in elevator work; engineering degree substitutes 1 year; letters of recommendation from previous employers; written examination (100 questions, 2-hour limit, 70% passing score)
Expires: Per renewal schedule
Elevator Contractor

Installation, repair, and maintenance of elevators

Requirements: 5+ years experience as elevator constructor or journeyperson; pass written examination (70% passing score); 2-year license validity
Expires: 2-year term
