02 TESTING

Testing & Inspection Schedule

Routine Inspection
Annual (12 months)

All elevators must be inspected annually. Routine visual inspections: 6-month intervals. Periodic tests with witness: annual intervals per ASME A17.1-2019 requirements.

Category 1 Test
6 months minimum interval

Category 1 periodic witness test per ASME A17.1-2019 covering basic examination of essential components. Minimum 6-month intervals required.

Category 5 Test
Every 5 years

Category 5 periodic witness test per ASME A17.1-2019 covering comprehensive evaluation within 5 years of most recent test.

Additional Required Tests

Fire service functional test
Per ASME A17.1-2019 — Firefighter emergency operation verification per ASME A17.1-2019.
Applies to: Elevators with fire service capability
Certificate validity: 12 months
Certificate of Compliance posted in car or on platform per state regulations.

Licensing Requirements

Elevator Mechanic

Installation, maintenance, alteration, inspection, and repair of elevators

Requirements: Must be licensed under Elevator, Escalator, and Moving Walkway (EEMW) Mechanics Licensing Board. License required to perform all elevator work. License bond required (surety bond amount specified in N.J.A.C. 13:44M-2.4).
