Tennessee adopts ASME A17.1-2016 with state-specific rules under Tennessee Administrative Code Chapter 0800-03-04. The state also adopts ASME A17.2-2017 as the Guide for Inspection of Elevators, Escalators and Moving Walks. State rules require semiannual inspections (twice per year) of all regulated devices, a departure from ASME's standard annual inspection schedule. No conveying device may be placed in operation until inspected by the Elevator Unit and issued an identification number.

The Tennessee Elevator Unit performs all routine inspections; private third-party inspection is not the primary inspection mechanism.
