Testing & Inspection Schedule
Wisconsin requires a valid Permit to Operate (PTO) for all conveyances serving commercial buildings under SPS 318.1013. Annual PTO renewal triggers the inspection cycle. Licensed elevator inspectors (QEI-certified per SPS 305) must conduct periodic inspections and file reports with DSPS. If the inspector fails to file 30 days before PTO expiration, DSPS may conduct the inspection directly.
Category 1 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2016 Section 8.6.1.2. Wisconsin SPS 318.17086 specifies annual Category 1 testing requirements. Elevators with installation contract dates on or after January 1, 1994 require annual Category 1 testing. Tests conducted by licensed elevator inspector; results filed with DSPS within 30 days of PTO expiration date.
Category 5 periodic test per ASME A17.1-2016 Section 8.6.1.6, full-load/full-speed comprehensive safety test. Required every 5 years; conducted by licensed elevator inspector.
