What is happening

The car is guided up and down rails by either roller guides or sliding guide shoes, driven by a machine and (on traction units) ropes over a sheave. Vibration comes from something in that chain being worn, misaligned, or out of true - so the car no longer tracks the rails smoothly or the drive no longer turns evenly.

Most likely causes

  1. Worn roller guides or guide-shoe gibs. The rollers or gibs that keep the car centered on the rails wear and let it wander - the classic cause of horizontal sway.
  2. Rail alignment or lubrication. Rails that have shifted (building settlement) or dried out create bumps and buzz at the guide interface.
  3. Sheave or rope issues (traction). A worn or grooved sheave, or unevenly worn ropes, transmits vibration into the car.
  4. Drive or motor issues. A drive tuning problem or a worn bearing can put a periodic vibration into the ride.

Less common causes

  • Counterweight guide wear.
  • Loose equipment in the machine room or on the car top resonating.
  • Speed-related harmonics that only appear near top speed.

What you can safely observe

Note whether the shaking is side-to-side or up-and-down, whether it is constant or only at certain speeds or floors, and whether it started suddenly or crept in. Note any new noise that came with it. That is all you should do.

Safety. Do not go on the car top, into the pit, or into the machine room to investigate - the guiding, roping, and drive are all qualified-mechanic territory. If the shaking is severe, came on suddenly, or is paired with banging, take the unit out of service and call your contractor.

Urgency & safety level

Low to medium, higher if it changed suddenly or comes with noise. Gradual roughening is wear. A sudden change is the signal that matters - it means a component crossed a threshold, and catching it early is cheaper than catching it after it fails.

When rough ride means it is time to modernize

Guide rollers and gibs are wear items and are worth replacing on their own. But if the roughness traces to a worn sheave, aging ropes, or a drive at the end of its adjustability, you are into the components a modernization addresses. Persistent ride complaints on an older unit are a common trigger to price a modernization - it is the upgrade tenants actually feel.

Questions to ask your contractor

  • Is the vibration horizontal (guiding) or vertical (drive/sheave/ropes)?
  • Is this a guide-roller/gib replacement, or something larger like the sheave or ropes?
  • Did anything change suddenly, and if so, what crossed its wear limit?
  • If it is the drive or sheave, how does a repair compare to a modernization?
