What is happening
A hydraulic elevator moves the car by pumping oil, and pumping oil generates heat. There is a temperature limit on the oil; a thermal cutout takes the unit out of service when it is exceeded, to protect the equipment. When the oil cools back down, the elevator returns to service. So an elevator that dies in the heat and revives when it is cool is telling you its oil is running too hot.

Most likely causes
- No oil cooler, or a failed one. Many older hydraulic units have no active cooling; on a hot day and a busy duty cycle, the oil simply climbs past the limit.
- Hot machine room. A machine room with poor ventilation bakes in summer, and the oil never gets a chance to shed heat.
- High duty cycle. A busy building works the pump harder, generating more heat than the system can dissipate.
- A hard-working or failing pump/motor. A unit that is straining runs hotter than it should.
Less common causes
- Low oil level or the wrong oil viscosity.
- A thermal switch set or failing incorrectly (nuisance trips).
- A machine room that lost its cooling (a failed AC unit serving it).
What you can safely observe
Note the time of day and outside temperature when it goes down, whether it comes back on its own, and roughly how hot the machine room feels (if you have safe access to its door area). Note whether the building has gotten busier. That pattern is exactly what a contractor needs.
Safety. Do not open the power unit, touch the oil or the thermal switch, or work in the machine room beyond noting ambient conditions from the doorway - hydraulic equipment is pressurized and hot. If riders are getting stranded by the shutdowns, treat entrapment as the priority and call your contractor.
Urgency & safety level
Medium to high. Overheating shutdowns are hard on the equipment and strand riders. It is not usually an immediate danger, but repeated summer outages are both a reliability problem and a sign the system is working beyond its cooling capacity - which shortens equipment life.
When repeated overheating means it is time to modernize
An oil cooler and better ventilation solve most cases and are far cheaper than a modernization. But if the unit is overheating because the pump is failing, the machine room cannot be cooled, or the whole hydraulic system is aged and undersized for the building's use, overheating becomes one more line in the case for a fuller modernization. Fix the cooling first; weigh modernization if the overheating is a symptom of a system at the end of its life.

- Is the oil actually overheating, and what is driving it - no cooler, hot machine room, duty cycle, or a struggling pump?
- Will an oil cooler solve it, and does the machine room also need ventilation?
- Is the thermal cutout working correctly, or is it a nuisance trip?
- If the pump or power unit is failing, how does that change the recommendation?
